720p (also known as HD ready) has a lower quality resolution overall and whilst this does mean that it is inferior overall to a 1080p HD television, it is worth bearing in mind that it is still high definition and of good quality. In fact, depending on screen size and the distance you are sat away from the screen, in many ways the differences between the two different types are not massive.

A used HD TV will allow to view a wide range of HD channels and various content. This is made up of various packages. First, there are those that come included, such as Freeview HD (or the older Freesat) and the wide range of subscription services that are now available.

LCD, LED and Plasma are three types you will find looking for a second hand HD TV. Plasma TVs have been all but phased out by manufacturers and LCD models tend to only go up to about 32" in screen sizes. LCD televisions tend to be lower in spec and are also being phased out to a large extent - of course, on the second hand market you will find a great deal of choice in LCD and plasma screens.

The vast majority of TVs (certainly in the mid-range) are likely to be LED TVs and these will nearly always be HD - and typically 1080p. HD TV is generally best viewed on as a large a screen as possible - it tends to bring the best out of, and pick  out the most precise details, which is sometimes lost slightly on a smaller screen. However, the most important factor to ensure the best viewing experience is not just the size of the screen itself, but that it fits the size of room that you are watching the second hand HD TV in.
